Problemen lacht hij weg, altijd iets om handen... Kindervoorstellingen kunnen er nooit genoeg zijn, en al helemaal niet inventieve, relevante en eigentijdse voorstellingen voor de allerkleinsten. Het is dan ook met voldoende en gepaste trots, en ook met erg veel vertrouwen dat CC De Kern een dubbele theaterpremiere aankondigt van het nieuwe gezelschap uil&spiegel. "Achterstevoren toch de juiste kant op" , dat is het motto van Nasreddin, de wijze dorpsheld en de gekke dorpsidioot uit het oosten. De bebaarde man spreekt al eeuwen tot de verbeelding. Zijn grappige en mythische legenden zijn talrijk en over vele culturen verspreid. Samen met zijn balkende beste vriend is Nasreddin met haast en spoed onderweg naar het prachtige paleis van de Sultan. Nasreddin, die door het leven gaat als een behulpzaam en eerlijk man, is blij en tegelijk erg benieuwd: hij is persoonlijk uitgenodigd door Zijne Hoogheid zelve! Wat is die gekke Sultan nu weer van plan? Vier veelbelovende twintigers uit het Antwerpse - een dj, een klassieke muzikant & twee acteurs - gebruiken de mythische Nasreddin als uitgangspunt voor een grappige & tot de verbeelding sprekende voorstelling. Acteur Matthias Meersman é Helene Devos zijn studenten aan de Studio Herman Teirlinck, Floris De Rycker hanteert de cister, een middeleeuwse luit, en clasht daarbij vrolijk met electronica-wizzard en DJ (geen Vlaams podium deze zomer of hij stond erop) Merdan Taplak. Inderdaad: een veelkleurige en originele bezetting - het resultaat is, naar wij hopen, navenant. Nasreddin is een voorstelling voor kinderen tussen 6 en 9 jaar. Speeltijd: ongeveer 60 minuten. Support by deejays like Gilles Peterson (UK, BBC), Pathaan (UK, BBC), Panjabi Mc (UK/India), Buscemi (B), and more... A 19th century military marching song remixed is quite an atypical musical experience, to say the least. Belgian-Turkish deejay Merdan Taplak (°1983) succeeded in blending Ottoman marching rhythms with today’s electronical grooves, creating a unique and surprising sound. “Remixing this not very obvious tune was my ambition for a while now, I am very happy to have finally finished it”, says the Antwerp based deejay. Ottoman, Turkish and Anatolian music has been on his mind since his childhood, for which you can blame the Turkish television stations. Merdan explains: “If one switches on a Turkish tv-network, odds are that some kind of musical show is being broadcasted. Music is – far more than in Belgium – very present in the daily life of Turkish people. Next to football, that is”. Besides the catchy chorus and the upfront rhythm – which the Ottoman military bands used for encouraging the soldiers – the lyrics are very notable. “In fact it’s quite a proud song about the Turkish history and about respecting your ancestors. But for me the lyrics are less important than the song’s pulse. That’s why I fooled around with the lyrics, cutting some parts into snippets and rearranging it”, says Merdan. As an historian, Merdan likes musical storytelling, but for him that’s just an incidental circumstance. “I’m focussed more on the music itself, the lyrics are just something that adds things up. It’s fascinating to realise the impact of the Ottoman music on the European musical tradition. Blending both traditions together – European and Ottoman, electronica and traditional - is an exiting endeavour for me, as both parts are also integrated in me personally”. At the moment, Merdan’s deejay dates are going strong, with a fully booked summer schedule. “My sole ambition is to make people dance on my musical blend of worldy grooves, spiced with some modern electronical sounds”.
